Behind the Scenes at Lane 7

We were a group of early birds on Monday for our collaborative shoot at boutique bowling alley, Lane 7. After Ellen, Kitty and I met up with Maxine at 7.20am, we headed to F6.Studios to get Kitty all dolled up. The make-up artist we were originally going to work with, Summer Rayne, was unfortunately unable to make the date so we contacted the lovely Maxine Ayre who very generously stepped in at short notice, despite a late night working and having to hire a childminder!

For the hair and make-up for the shoot, we all shared a few ideas before agreeing on a monochrome eye and orange lip, keeping with recent beauty trends and enhancing Kitty's dazzling blue eyes. Maxine has a make-up kit to die for, a suitcase jam-packed with high-pigmented powders and creams in all shades, enabling her to create a wide variety of looks. Her 16 years of experience in the industry has meant that she has perfected her skills to a very high standard, so much that she now also loves to create stunning life-like portraits using only make-up in her spare time! Unfortunately, our male model Koshy couldn't make it due to illness which was a massive shame, but we still managed to get some brilliant shots of Kitty.

After dashing about to find a parking space, we eventually made it to the venue at around 10am, where in perfect timing we arrived at the same time as Thushara, editor of Darkus magazine! We were kindly welcomed in by Chrissie, Lane 7's 'Events Extraordinaire', who allowed us to use pretty much anything that we needed in the venue, which was fantastic, as there were so many amazing props that worked perfectly with the theme of our shoot!

We started out on the freshly polished bowling alleys, taking care not to step on the actual lanes as to not slip and injure ourselves or mess up the hard work of the men who had just polished them. Starting on the ground floor next to the giant windows, we were highly amused to see the men on their way to work, stuck in rush hour and unable to take their eyes away from the set! Far from the sweet, almost shy girl that I first met, Kitty completely blossomed in front of the camera, becoming this bold, commanding and playful character, effortlessly switching poses and having fun with the different props on set, and she was amazing to watch.

For the styling of the shoot, we kept the look quite minimal in that it worked around a monochrome appearance with flashes of subtle colour. With the cropped striped top (we loved the neckline on this!) and pastel cigarette pants, we found the pink 'Victoria' collar complimented the outfit well, as did the 'Cupid' collar paired with the reversible cuffs. The '8 ball' was the perfect prop, and the sophisticated, minimalist appearance of the alleys at Lane 7 was the perfect backdrop!

As time was passing fast, we decided to head down to the Basement after a few shots on the bowling lanes. The Basement currently has an amazing temporary miniature golf course, and the floor is covered in chunky monochrome chevrons, again working perfectly with our theme! We changed Kitty's outfit into a more simple, monochrome look to compliment the patterned, more bold accessories. The leopard fur 'Dusty' collar looked amazing with the simple cream vest we styled it with, and wasn't too overpowering with the gingham mini-skirt as they were set quite far from each other. We decided to leave the cuffs on as they worked well with the outfit and reversed to the black side, are quite understated and will work with most garments and accessories! The vintage handbag is actually my Auntie June's, which she gave to me a few years back. It was lovely to be able to use it in a shoot and mix in something vintage and quite personal with new clothes and my accessories, and it also matched the chunky white heels brilliantly. We later reversed the cuffs to the gingham side to match the gingham 'Dusty' collar, to show off the collar and cuffs as a matching set, which has a more tailored appearance.

When we arrived at the bottom of the stairs, Ellen was drawn towards the neon lights, so we grabbed a few shots in front of the 'Ballroom' sign before going into miniature golf. I love the industrial club feel of these shots, as they lend a completely new dimension to the shoot and somehow makes the outfit appear very glamorous rather than very slick and minimalist as it appears in a different setting.

After playing around with poses with the golf clubs and letting Kitty stretch her legs after being crammed inside a loop, we dashed upstairs with only 10 minutes left of our time we booked in, before Lane 7 opened to the public. We immediately spotted the amazing retro hairdressers chairs as we walked in, which we used as a set before squeezing a few more on the table next to the other bowling alleys. We encountered a new challenge when Ellen's new trigger broke, meaning the flash couldn't be used, but luckily it was a sunny morning and she was great at using the natural light to her advantage.

Knowing that our time was up (we probably stayed a little longer than we should have), we moved the shoot to outside behind the venue to get some street shots. Luckily the sun was still shining and we had a pair of fantastic retro-style sunglasses for Kitty to wear, so we took some pictures of her in her final outfit, which included a powder-blue shift dress from Asos and a faux leopard fur 'sleeve accessory' I had a sampled. The accessory looked fantastic layered over the dress with its turn-up sleeves with black cotton lining, and the shoulder pads added a bit more drama than the collar and cuff accessories. Eventually when all the shots were done, and we were all dying for something to eat having failed miserably at attempting to cook some croissants earlier in the studios, Ellen, Kitty and I bid farewell to Maxine and Thushara and headed straight to Ninety-Nine for some fresh burgers and pasta.

Yesterday Ellen gave us a sneaky peek of one of the pictures she has edited from the shoot, and although we aren't able to share it yet, it does look amazing!! I can't wait to see our feature in fantastic local magazine Darkus, which will be an issue focusing on local designers so it's an exciting time!

I'm very grateful to have had the opportunity to take part in this wonderful collaboration, and would like to thank everyone involved for their time and effort. Here are some links to find out more about these talented people and one of Newcastle's most exciting venues:

1960's Mod-inspired Collaboration at Lane 7

Last Summer I collaborated with local photographer Sarah Raymond (now in London), on an urban-retro shoot round Byker. We had a great day stumbling across random but perfect locations with model Georgia Thompson and photography assistant Ellen Rachel, such as JJ's Cafe with it's charmingly unpretentious yellow walls and mismatched paintings, and Hazel's Fruit and Veg stall with its traditional fat green and white stripes.

More recently I noticed Ellen, the photographer who assisted on the shoot, post onto Facebook advertising to see if anyone would be interested in taking part in a 1960's mod-inspired collaboration. Having enjoyed working with her previously and already having a strong love of mod style (oh the youthful classiness and timelessness of it all!), I jumped at the chance to take part.

Gorgeous blue-eyed local model Kitty Quinzell also loved the theme, then another great addition to the team came in the form of dapper male model Koshy Thomas!

Using Pinterest as a starting point for inspiration, we looked at editorials, we looked at clothes, we looked at make-up and hair, we looked at everything! Coming to the realisation that monochrome mod shoots had been done to death, and that we weren't the only people organising a mod-style shoot, we agreed on keeping the look contemporary and fresh with the addition of pastels to add some originality. Some of the colours will be used in the make-up, for which we've booked Maximillion Makeup and Hair (if you haven't checked her out, she's a genius...just look at her make-up portraits!)

With discussions over the shot location, we decided that new boutique bowling venue Lane 7 looked a promising possibility! Unlike a typical bowling alley, Lane 7 is pretty much a really glossy bar with a bit of an industrial feel, with 10-pin bowling, ping pong and pool added in without the horrible hotdogs and moulded seats. To put it simply, the design of the place is retro-revisited, maintaining a retro charm whilst looking really contemporary, perfect for the look we're going for. It only took a quick visit and a few emails (Chrissie the events extraordinaire has been unbelievably generous!) and we're all booked in!

I think it's safe to say we're all really excited for this shoot, we have a fantastic team, a great venue and the final images will also be published in local fashion and music magazine, Darkus! Will post more very shortly!

It's Official!

The past few weeks have been rather busy but exciting, and things are a little more official! I've registered myself as a sole trader, launched 'melaniekyles.co.uk', popped some products onto Etsy and made a few pairs of reversible cuffs to match the 'Dusty' collars.

Branding, RAG Week, Clothes and Cakes!

I'm aware I've neglected this blog for a little while, so other than another couple of Christmas markets I took part in with F6 Studios (which were wonderful, I even picked up a genuine leather vintage skirt for a tenner!), here is what I've been busy with...

Firstly as it is the new year and at the beginning of January people tend to 'MOT' things, something that had needed sprucing up for a while was my old logo. It's not that there was anything wrong with it, but although less is usually more, I felt the logo was perhaps a bit too minimalistic for the style of my accessories, which tend to have a decorative quality whether that be a print or selective embellishment or appliqué. After toying between bows and skeleton keys, I decided that a bow would be more appropriate as it can be sharp, feminine, quirky, sexy and simple. It took me a while to get back to grips with Illustrator, but I managed to create this bow logo, keeping the same font and using only my initials for a more striking effect. I'm sooo happy with the new design! For the swing tags, I incorporated the same teal Pantone shade of my previous logo, which was printed onto textured watercolour card, embellished with a silver eyelet and black grosgrain ribbon to tie.

More recently I was kindly welcomed back to Newcastle University where I took part in the last RAG Week event of the year, which was their Vintage Fashion Fair and Tea Party. I was delighted to be involved with RAG Week again, as not only is it for a fantastic cause but it's also where I had my fashion show debut only several months ago. It was lovely to see the girls again and to see the result of their hard work (which they managed to juggle with final year exams!), and they managed to raise almost £700 for charity at the Vintage Fashion Fair and Tea Party alone!

Here are a few pictures I took of my stall on the day, unfortunately I somehow forgot to take a picture of the rail which had the majority of my accessories on (doh!), but here's a small selection of accessories, some of which were featured at Gladrags and others that are more recently made. As well as some accessories, I also included some dried rose petals in small gift boxes and organza bags to sell for Valentine's day, which is fast approaching. After trial and error of accidentally burning/shrinking the petals, I eventually concluded I had to double wrap them in tea towels before putting them on top of a wood burner and babysitting them for exactly half an hour. The best thing about them being real petals is: A) far more romantic than plastic or paper petals to decorate a candle-lit meal and B) they can also be used to freshen up wardrobes and/or underwear drawers, so definitely worth the extra effort!

And as all of the accessories are hand-made, I've hand-threaded a selection of vintage and retro buttons onto my business cards, for anyone who would like to try their hand at reviving or up-cycling some of the more forgotten parts of their wardrobes!

When the event was more quiet, I had a wander round some of the other stalls that were there, which were all selling vintage clothing. Some of the shops I'd heard of but not seen, as they're based in Sunderland and Whitley Bay so was nice to finally have a look at them. It was lovely to meet the other stall holders and get to rummage through their vintage treasures; things I was really tempted into buying were the baby-doll vintage dresses at 'Scout', soft leather backpacks at 'The Yesterday Society' and gorgeous versatile scarves at 'Dregs of Society'. 'Bowler Hat Vintage' also had some stunning, original length dresses and skirts which felt more 'Attica' than 'Best Vintage'. I even had a little experiment with the stall holder trying different broaches with my own 'Dusty' collar, tapping into the 'embellished collar' trend for Spring!

Finally here are a couple of pictures of the fabulous bake sale the RAG team put on, with everything being only 50p! The huge circus cake won the prize for best cake, but I was rather partial to the Oreo cupcakes, which seemed to be blended Oreo cookies with white and milk chocolate buttons on top...and ended up being my lunch for the day! The Ryan Gosling cupcakes were also rather popular.

All in all I had a wonderful day and I'm very grateful to the RAG girls and the support they have given me this year, and I wish them all the best for whatever they progress to once they have graduated. Plans for the immediate future include launching my website and writing a couple of fashion articles for new Gateshead-based magazine, Engage, so keep your eyes peeled!

No.28 goes all 1930's burlesque!

A couple of months ago at the start of October, we set the wheels in motion for organising a 1930's inspired burlesque shoot between Bad Kitty Corsets, Michael Gordon Photography and myself. Despite a few hiccups along the way in finding an MUA/hairstylist and one of our models unfortunately having to cancel last minute due to work clashes, I'm delighted that it all came together spectacularly last Sunday!

We were kindly allowed to hire out the space in what is one of the best hidden jems in Newcastle, No.28, which is just in the entrance to the Grainger Market. The first thing you notice about No.28 is it's stunning decor of vine leaves, classic statues covered in red lipstick kisses, pearls, flowers and fairy lights dripping from the ceiling and embellished with cheeky paintings and art-deco mirrors. With it's varied and quirky choice of seating, it turned out to be the perfect place for our 1930's vintage inspired burlesque shoot!)

Setting up at No.28

The day officially started when I picked our model Millie Parker up from No.28 at lunch time to take her back to the studios for a corset fitting, hair and make-up. I matched some collars and cuffs to the successful corsets whilst Kelly (of Bad Kitty Corsets) laced her in and out of them to find out which ones were most flattering. As the corsets and girdles are very tailored, personal garments, not all of the size 8 corsets/girdles fit but this wasn't a problem as Kelly had plenty of stunning pieces to choose from! We eventually settled on a simple red corset, an ombre-dyed lemon and turquoise corset (which I think she said took her around 7 hours to dye alone!) and a stunning pink corset with vintage French lace with a matching headpiece. We were lucky that Millie had already came with her hair curled and make-up done, as it saved a lot of time and it only took a slick of Kelly's dark lipstick and magic highlighting brush to complete the look.

When we were all satisfied with the corsets/accessories/hair/make-up, we helped our photographer Michael (of Michael Gordon Photography) and Lucie Cox (our photography assistant notably a talented photographer in her own right) transport their equipment from F6.Studios to No.28. After playing around with a few test shots to get the lighting spot-on, we finally got Millie into her first outfit and began shooting. Amazingly this was her first ever time modelling other than head-shots, so being dressed as a 1930's burlesque girl in the presence of those finishing their Sunday lunches was undoubtedly quite challenging, but she done a brilliant job!

Behind the scenes

More behind the scenes

Unfortunately due to our space being booked till 4.30 and having shot for over 2 hours, we only had time for two of the corsets, but we did manage to cram in a variety of looks by switching accessories including a gorgeous head-piece made by Kelly. Here are a few of the final shots:

I think it's safe to say that we all had a lot of fun doing this shoot, and I'm really looking forward to seeing the rest of the final edits! Here are some links to the collaborators sites:
